Signs Your Well Pump Needs Attention

🚫

No water at all

The most urgent sign. Could be the pump, a tripped breaker, or a failed pressure switch.

📉

Low or dropping pressure

Gradual pressure loss often points to a worn pump impeller, a waterlogged tank, or a failing pressure switch.

Pump runs constantly

A pump that won't shut off is often fighting a failed pressure tank or a pressure switch stuck open.

💧

Sputtering or air in lines

Spitting faucets and air pockets are classic signs of a pump losing prime or a dropping water table.

🟩

Discolored or cloudy water

Sudden sediment or rust-colored water can indicate a failing pump screen or a pump stirring sediment near its end of life.

💡

Rapid short-cycling

Pump kicks on and off constantly — usually means a waterlogged pressure tank that needs replacement, not the pump itself.

Well Pump Services We Provide

🔧

Well Pump Repair

When the pump itself is the problem — failed motor, worn impeller, broken shaft — we pull the pump, assess it, and repair or replace it on the spot when possible.

🔄

Well Pump Replacement

When a pump has reached the end of its life, we size and install a replacement matched to your well depth, flow rate, and household demand. We handle the full pull-and-set.

👂

Pressure Tank Service

A failed pressure tank is the single most common cause of premature pump failure. We inspect tank charge pressure, bladder condition, and replace waterlogged or failed tanks.

🔍

Pump System Diagnostics

Not all no-water calls mean a failed pump. We check pressure switches, control boxes, wiring, and breakers first — sometimes a simple component fix is the right answer.

Submersible vs. Jet Pumps — Which Do You Have?

The type of pump in your system determines how it's serviced and what failure looks like. Earl's Plumbing works on both.

Most common in NorCal

Submersible Pumps

  • Installed inside the well casing, underwater
  • Pushes water up to the surface
  • Quieter operation — sealed below ground
  • Typical lifespan: 10–15 years
  • Common in drilled wells 50–400+ feet deep
  • Requires pulling the drop pipe and pump for service
Shallow & older wells

Jet Pumps

  • Installed above ground — in a pump house or basement
  • Pulls water up using suction
  • Shallow-well jet: up to ~25 feet depth
  • Deep-well jet: up to ~90 feet depth
  • Easier to access for service; audible during operation
  • More susceptible to losing prime

Not sure what type you have? We'll identify it during our diagnostic visit — at no charge alongside any repair or replacement quote. You can also learn more on our dedicated Chico well pump repair page.

Northern California Well Properties Are Different

I'll be straight with you — well pump problems in our part of California aren't always straightforward. We've got drilled wells in the Shasta foothills running 300 feet deep, shallow dug wells on Butte County ranches, and older jet pump systems in the Sacramento Valley that haven't been touched in 20 years. They all fail differently, and they all need someone who's actually worked on them.

We've been servicing well systems across Northern California since 1998. That means we've seen what local water conditions, local soils, and local water tables do to pumps over time. (Hard well water and sediment-heavy aquifers are particularly rough on impellers — something you don't find in the manufacturer's spec sheet.)

Well Water Quality & Your Pump

Something a lot of well owners don't realize: water quality directly affects pump life. High iron content, sediment-heavy water, and hard mineral deposits accelerate wear on pump impellers and pressure tank bladders. Treating your water isn't just about taste — it protects the equipment.

If you're scheduling well pump service, ask us about pairing it with a whole-house water filtration system, a water softener, or a reverse osmosis system — protecting the water before it hits your pipes protects everything downstream, including the pump itself.

And if you've had a leak you can't find, we also offer professional leak detection — some well system leaks happen underground and go undetected for months, burning out the pump in the process.

Well Pump FAQs

A sudden loss of water is most often caused by a failed submersible pump, a tripped circuit breaker, a failed pressure switch, or a waterlogged pressure tank. Earl's Plumbing technicians diagnose well pump systems across Chico, Redding, and Yuba City — call us and we'll tell you what's going on before you spend anything. No service call fee.
Most submersible well pumps last 8 to 15 years depending on water quality, run cycles, and pump sizing. Shallow jet pumps often last 10 to 15 years. Northern California's hard well water can shorten pump life — regular pressure tank checks and sediment filtration help extend it significantly.
A pressure tank stores pressurized water so your pump doesn't cycle on and off every time you open a faucet. A waterlogged or failed pressure tank causes rapid short-cycling, which burns out pumps prematurely. Earl's Plumbing inspects and replaces pressure tanks — call your nearest office for a free quote.
Submersible pumps are installed inside the well casing underwater and push water to the surface — common in drilled wells and quieter during operation. Jet pumps sit above ground and pull water up using suction; shallow-well jets work to about 25 feet, deep-well jets to about 90 feet. Submersible pumps are more efficient for most Northern California drilled wells.
No — and that's not going to change. We've never charged a service call fee, and I don't plan to start. You shouldn't have to pay just to find out what something costs. Show up, diagnose it, give you a straight answer, give you a free quote — that's the deal. — Clinton Earl, Owner
Yes. Many Northern California well owners deal with hard water, sediment, iron, and sulfur odors. Earl's Plumbing offers whole-house water filtration, water softeners, and reverse osmosis systems that pair well with pump service — and treating the water going through your system also protects the pump itself.
